The Academy Introduces Casting Award for the 98th Oscars

Published on August 13, 2024

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced a historic addition to the Oscars lineup: the introduction of a casting award. This new category, set to debut at the 98th Oscars ceremony in 2026, marks a significant recognition of the crucial role casting directors play in the filmmaking process.

For the first time in the Academy's history, casting directors will be honored alongside other essential contributors to the success of a film, such as directors, screenwriters, and actors. The new award underscores the importance of casting as an art form, highlighting the creativity, intuition, and expertise required to assemble the perfect cast for a motion picture.

David Rubin, CSA, the Academy’s Casting Branch Governor, past President and the first casting director ever to hold the position of Academy President, expressed his excitement about this development: "Casting is often the invisible hand that shapes a film's narrative and brings its characters to life. By establishing this award, the Academy acknowledges the vital contribution of casting directors to the storytelling process."

Rubin, has been a long-time advocate for the recognition of casting directors within the industry. His leadership has been instrumental in bringing this award to fruition, reflecting AMPAS's commitment to inclusivity and representation.

The new casting award will be presented to the casting director(s) responsible for the film’s casting and will recognize outstanding achievement in the casting of a feature film. This decision follows years of advocacy by the Casting Society and other industry professionals who have long championed the need for this recognition.

The introduction of this category also reflects the Academy's ongoing commitment to inclusivity and representation within the film industry. As the first new category to be added since the introduction of the Best Animated Feature Film award in 2001, the casting award is a landmark moment in Oscar history.

Academy President Janet Yang commented, "This is a monumental step forward for our industry. Casting directors have a profound impact on the stories we tell, and this new award is a celebration of their artistry and dedication."

The 98th Oscars, where this award will be presented for the first time, will be held on March 22, 2026. The addition of the casting award is expected to bring even more excitement and anticipation to Hollywood’s biggest night.

As AMPAS continues to evolve and embrace all facets of filmmaking, the inclusion of the casting category is a powerful affirmation of the integral role that casting directors play in the creative process. This new recognition will shine a well-deserved spotlight on the individuals who find the talent that makes cinematic magic possible.
